Getting a college letter of acceptance is huge enough, but this one includes the magic of augmented reality.

The Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in China is blowing minds, by issuing its letters of acceptance to students with a companion AR app.

Students first scan a QR code on messaging app WeChat, which prompts the download of NPU's AR app.

Upon opening the app, students will be able to see overlaid on the letter, a virtual model of the university, including information about its history, and information about its specialty departments in aeronautical, astronautical and marine engineering.

This is the first AR-enabled acceptance letter to be sent out in China -- and the concept also appears to be a world first.

The NPU added that the AR tech was meant to show off the school's "cutting-edge" technology.

"Although the admission notice is just a piece of a paper, the carefully embedded AR technology serves to show a cutting-edge temperament and a sense of pride," Xie Dan, admissions office deputy director of NPU told state media outlet the People's Daily.
