Amy Adams' alien 'Arrival' can't top 'Doctor Strange' at the box office
Marvel has another November hit on its hands.
For the second weekend in a row, the trippy Doctor Strange is #1 at the domestic box office, with an estimated $43 million. It's a #2-peat as well for Trolls, which hangs on in second place with an estimated $35.1 million.
In both cases, the continuing success can be credited to lingering interest and repeat viewings. Strange ticket sales dropped just 49 percent over the weekend -- which is the lower end of normal for movies in their second weekend.

After opening with an almost identical box office total to Marvel's only other November release to date, Thor: The Dark World -- $85.7 million then versus $85.1 million now -- Strange is looking like the bigger hit. The Sorcerer Supreme's $43 million second weekend is far ahead of Thor's $36.6 million in weekend two.
Trolls hangs on to the same second place finish as last week after ticket sales dropped by a mere 25 percent. That's tiny. Fox can thank generally positive reviews and the star power of leads Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake.
It's not until #3 that we find a new release: the Amy Adams-led alien drama, Arrival. Its estimated $24 million start isn't terrible, and strong buzz should help it maintain a box office presence during the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend.
Behind Arrival is the holiday season's first proper Christmas movie, Almost Christmas. The ensemble comedy/drama took in an estimated $15.6 million.
It should maintain its #4 spot in the weekend's box office race after the final tallies come in. Arrival is too far ahead, and #5's Hacksaw Ridge -- with an estimated $10.8 million -- is unlikely to catch up.
