Astronauts may be far from home, but they still celebrate the holidays.

Residents of the International Space Station posted an incredible photo and video for the holidays, celebrating both Hanukkah and Christmas far above the world.

Astronaut Jessica Meir posted a stunning picture from the station's cupola, the small, panoramic, ESA-built observatory module of the station. It allows for observation of activities like spacewalks and shuttle approaches, but also provides the perfect place to celebrate Hanukkah.

In another post, Meir and her fellow astronauts and ISS residents Christina Koch, Andrew Morgan, and Luca Parmitano all gathered in a highly decorated room for their holiday message.

"My favourite thing about the holiday season is that it's a time when the world slows down and we all get a chance to think about and appreciate and reflect on what's really important, which is the people that we love and spending time together," said Koch.

Parmitano took the opportunity to thank those in service away from their families at this time of year, and Meir noted she celebrates both Hanukkah and Christmas (lucky). Morgan explained that he was going to bring some of his own family traditions to the ISS — like turning out all the lights in the house on Christmas Eve and just enjoying a spot of candlelight.

"Now, we can't have candles and candelight on the International Space Station but we can turn the lights down low and we can watch Christmas movies, and so we're going to do something like that," said Morgan.

Then, they break out some special Christmas goodies, including hot apple cider and cocoa, smoked salmon, and some stockings to "float by the chimney with care." Plus, there's a seasonal delight you can't ever escape — not even on the ISS.

"We had to come all the way to space to get away from fruitcake but it didn't work," said Koch.

It's been a huge year for the team at the ISS . For one thing, Koch and Meir made history after embarking upon the first ever all-female spacewalk in October. Happy holidays, team.
