When one recalls the 1993 fantasy-comedy Harold Ramis classic Groundhog Day, a few things come to mind: Bill Murray, snow, groundhogs, time, consequence, and of course....The Panama Canal?

Well, now Groundhog Day is playing on Broadway. And last night, Bill Murray was in attendance to view one of his finest roles and was very Bill Murray about the whole thing. The New York Times reporter Sopan Deb was also there and was able to document this historic event.

Ned Ryerson punch reference? BING!

After the performance, Bill Murray gave a very rousing speech to the cast in which he was somehow able to shoehorn in a comparison to the Panama Canal. Which, of course.

... Because that's - the power of the idea that Danny Rubin and Harold Ramis wrote.

Because the power of the idea that Danny had is so strong. It's like the idea of the Panama Canal. I know this sounds stupid. There are ideas that have enough energy in them to complete the intention. And the idea of the Panama Canal was completed, even though tens of thousands of people died doing it. The idea of this story, you can do. Because the power is there. Okay? Just we're all in this today. We're all - always in this together.

Murray was brought to tears at the end of the show because of its message, saying, "The idea that we just have to try again. We just have to try again. It’s such a beautiful, powerful idea.”
