An 11-year-old boy from Suzhou, China, has made national headlines after he deliberately cut off his finger following a quarrel with his father.

The boy, who is referred to as Xiaopeng by the Chinese media, was fed up with his father's nagging over his smartphone usage, reported several local news outlets.

According to Xiaopeng's parents, they had not expected their son to react this way to their lecture.

Both parents were not pleased that their son had been glued to his phone since he woke up Saturday morning, the day of the fateful incident. They felt that Xiaopeng was setting a bad example for his 6-year-old brother.

After Xiaopeng's mother complained to his dad about his bad phone usage habit, the latter decided to have a stern talk with his son. The talk soon escalated into a war of words, and in a fit of anger, Xiaopeng grabbed a knife from behind him and brought it down on his left index finger.

Xiaopeng's parents were horrified by the turn of events and immediately rushed their son and the severed finger to Ruihua Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University.

The operation to reattach the finger took three hours but head surgeon Ren Zhourong told the parents that it'll take at least a week to determine if it was a success.

"Young children have fine blood vessels, which made the operation much more difficult," Ren said. "If the operation is a complete success, the impact of this rash incident on Xiaopeng's future use of his left hand should be minimal."
