What was initially reported as a romantic story took a nightmarish turn when a Chinese woman revealed that the boyfriend who sat by her bed and took care of her while she lay in a coma for eight months was the one who put her there in the first place.

Local reports had portrayed Liu Fenghe as the loving boyfriend of 22-year-old Lin Yingying, who stayed by her bed and spent 200,000 yuan ($30,700) on her hospital bills.

But Lin has come out to tell the press that Liu was the one who inflicted the head injury that left her in a vegetative state.

According to Lin, Liu started to beat her repeatedly when she accidentally burnt some bread in the bakery that they both ran in Liaoning, China. Lin also stated that the beating, which took place in Sep. 2014, wasn't an isolated incident.

Lin's family was finally able to take her home in Feb. 2015, after Liu initially forbade them from visiting her. Later, she regained consciousness in May 2015, and managed to tell her family what happened, but said she didn't dare to speak out in public till now, out of fear of Liu.

It was after months of persuasion from Lin's father, Lin Shuqing, that Lin finally told Chinese reporters that Liu wasn't who he said he was.

According to Lin, her father told her: "You have died once, what more are you afraid of? It's time to confront reality."

The Lins have since reported the matter to the authorities.
