One of the attackers who blew himself up at Brussels Airport on March 22 once worked as a cleaner at the European Parliament in the heart of the city, a spokesperson said on Wednesday, Reuters reports.

"One of the perpetrators of the Brussels terrorist attacks worked for a period of one month for a cleaning company which was contracted by the European Parliament at the time," spokesman Jaume Duch Guillot said in a statement provided to the news agency.

Reuters, citing a European Union official, named the janitor as Najim Laachraoui, the 25-year-old suspected bombmaker tied to both the Brussels attacks as well as the ones that struck Paris last year.

The person said Laachraoui was employed at least six years ago, in 2009 or 2010. Laachraoui was then a student at a Catholic high school in Schaerbeek, the Institut de la Sainte-Famille d’Helmet, The New York Times reported last month.

The school is just a 15-minute drive away from the EU's headquarters.

The building was placed under maximum security last month after one of the blasts targeted the Maelbeek metro station, which is steps from the European Union's headquarters.

A total of 32 people were killed and hundreds more injured in the attacks.
