'Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare' takes epic gunfights to outer space

We've apparently blown up too much of the Earth to keep fighting there.

The rumors are true: Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is a real game, and it's set -- at least partially -- in outer space.

A newly released trailer delivers our first look at Infinity Ward's latest, which pits the armies of Earth against the Settlement Defense Front. While past games in the series have focused on global combat operations, this one ventures beyond the stratosphere and carries the fight to distant planets.

As we learned from Activision's tie-in alternate reality game, the SDF is portrayed as a terrorist threat bringing their fight to Earth -- overseen by the collected governments of UNSA -- for unspecified reasons. You play as part of the S.A.T.O. fighting force, specifically the S.C.A.R. special ops division.

As you can see in the trailer, making war in space means you'll pilot attack fighters, operate in zero-G environments and lean on tools like grappling cords. Also, there are robots. Killer robots.

The trailer also confirms the existence of a "Legacy Edition" for Infinite Warfare, which packs in the newly remastered Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare as well. (A revised title drops the "4.")

That 2007 game from Infinity Ward introduced fundamental changes to the series, including a modern combat setting and -- perhaps more significantly -- a multiplayer mode enhanced with RPG-style leveling and unlocks.

In addition to bringing back the memorable story-driven campaign from Modern Warfare, the remaster also revives 10 classic multiplayer maps from the original game for players to duke it out on.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare arrives on Nov. 4, 2016. The Legacy Edition brings the typical $59.99 price up to $79.99. There's also a $99.99 "Deluxe Edition" that adds in the game's Season Pass (which gets you all downloadable content) and a $119.99 "Pro Edition" that adds a soundtrack, collectible case and unspecified digital goodies.

Expect more to be revealed later when Infinity Ward discusses Infinite Warfare in a 1:30 p.m. ET live stream.
