Mattress startup Casper now sells dog beds

Mattress startup Casper has gone to the dogs.

The e-commerce company, known for shipping mattresses in ultra-compact boxes, rolled out a new canine-focused product line this week.

The beds come in three sizes to accommodate different breeds and range in price from $125 to $225.

That's a bit expensive as far as dog beds go, but Casper says the pets' comfort level was not taken lightly. The startup's product team spent nearly two years analyzing canine sleeping patterns, working with dog psychologists and even studying the interaction between dog fur and different textiles under a microscope.

The process was actually harder in some respects than it would have been for a product designed for humans.

"Our typical product design process involves human centered design, including intensive beta testing and detailed user feedback sessions — things we couldn't rely on with dogs cause they tend to be less verbal," Casper co-founder and CEO Jeff Chapin said in a press release.

The beds also had to stand up to the wear and tear of the typical dog's lifestyle.

Dozens of prototypes and hundreds of lab hours later, Casper thinks it's cracked the code.

The product launch is kicking off with a "dog-fluencer steak dinner," featuring celebrity canines like Marnie and Toast, and a pop-up dog mattress showroom in New York.

The three-year-old mattress retailer has raised $72 million in venture capital to date, according to CrunchBase.
