The 1970s were a time marked by culinary innovations such as fondue and the Baked Alaska, but looking through old recipes of this period unveils some truly unique dishes.

Take for instance the recipe for Cheese Bananas, taken from a 1971 copy of Woman's Weekly magazine in New Zealand and uploaded initially by zingibergirl on reddit.

While most functioning humans were grossed out by the thought of mushy, sweet bananas clashing with the saltiness of ham and the fat of the melted cheese, redditor lsblk, was brave enough to put the original recipe to the test.

The recipe consists of bananas (of course), tasty a.k.a. cheddar cheese, ham slices, white sauce a.k.a. béchamel, and a whack of chopped parsley. The ingredients are enough to make one wince. Except for the parsley, that's fresh.

In an interesting twist, lsblk wrote a review of the bizarre concoction admitting it was somewhat enjoyable. "The cooking actually sucks all the sweetness out of the bananas. If I had one criticism is that the bananas were essentially flavourless, which I kind of expected to happen, and why I put honey on the changed up version," the clever chef wrote.

A modern version constructed with bacon and shallots also came highly recommended. That will be taste tested next week on Disgusting Historical Recipes
