A large part of China will face a brief but noticeable wave of cold weather this week, with strong winds and snow hitting some parts.

The country's National Meteorological Center (NMC) said on Monday that most of central and eastern China will see temperatures falling between 6 and 10 degrees Celsius till Friday. It's issued a blue alert for the cold snap -- the lowest on China's four-tier warning system that goes from red at the most serious, to orange, yellow and blue.

Northern China will see snow and sleet during the week, and the cold front will bring temperatures in parts south of the Yangtze River down to 1 degree Celsius. The south will also get winds of up to 74 km/h (46 mph), which bring gales that can rock trees and break smaller twigs off.

The Yangtze runs through central and eastern China before reaching the sea at Shanghai.

This cold front follows some of the country's coldest weather in decades, that hit China in January and was so severe it forced flights to be cancelled.

End-January's weather triggered an orange alert in the country, and hit -41 degrees Celsius in northern parts. Two-thirds of the country saw temperatures drop to below -12 degrees Celsius.

Chongqing, in the southeast of the country, saw snow for the first time in 20 years, authorities said.
