A man dining with a group of friends at a seafood restaurant in Fujian, China, got more than he bargained for when he landed in hospital after consuming ill-prepared pufferfish on Sunday.

The unlucky fellow, identified only as Wang, was rushed to the hospital after he fell violently ill. Wang felt dizzy after eating the pufferfish soup and proceeded to vomit continuously for three hours after, Xiamen-based Straits Herald reported.

Pufferfish -- known as "river pig" in China -- is considered a delicacy in Asia. Only licensed chefs are allowed to prepare pufferfish dishes as its liver, ovaries and other organs contain high levels of toxins.

Wang's epicurean adventure led doctors to pump his stomach eight times to ensure that his system was purged of the poison.

It was confirmed by doctors that Wang had suffered pufferfish poisoning. His condition is now stable.

The owner of the restaurant, who goes by the name Li, admitted to local authorities that she did not properly clean the pufferfish liver, which caused the dish served to Wang to be contaminated.

Li and the restaurant are now being investigated.
