Being a nonsmoker and living in a dorm with roommates who all smoke can be a recipe for disaster -- especially when they see no issue with lighting up inside.

An unfortunate university student from Nanning in southern China found himself in this exact situation.

But instead of resigning himself to fate, the 26-year-old, who goes under the pseudonym of Shandianzhililiang on Weibo, came up with an idea that has bewildered Chinese netizens.

Aware of the negative effects of long-term exposure to second-hand smoke, Shandianzhililiang took matters into his own hands and built a breathing device out of cardboard, garbage bags and a clip-on fan.

The device is connected to a window that channels fresh air directly to the young man when he wears the box-end of the device over his head.

In his Weibo post, he drew a stick-figure drawing explaining how the device would work.

While the device might seem over the top, we don't know whether or not it was his last resort after a confrontation with his roommates. Shandianzhililiang hasn't elaborated on the situation.

Regardless, we hope he won't have to wear the device for long. It can't be comfortable putting that on your head for extended periods of time.
