Too real.

It's no surprise that college students often take on great debt after graduation.

Maigan Kennedy is a Meredith College senior and theater major who decided to depict herself literally drowning in debt for her graduation photos.

Taken by Areon Mobasher, the images serve as a tongue-in-cheek way to address the student debt issue that is sweeping the nation.

"I would say the shoot was 3 parts comedy, 2 parts commentary on the difficulty of paying for education in the States," Kennedy told Mashable in an email. "But it's very light-hearted."

"I knew I wanted to take pictures to celebrate graduating," Kennedy said. "But they couldn't just be your average smile-and-shoot because I'm too goofy as a human being. I wanted to express myself the best way I know how: humor."

Kennedy posted her graduation photo shoot to Imgur under the name pearlsandwhiskey, which left her open to that infamous Internet commenter criticism.

"Most people have responded positively, either by expressing that they found it funny or by commiserating with the indebtedness aspect," Kennedy explained.

Her parents have yet to react to the debt-related pictures.

"I'm not even sure my parents have seen the pictures yet! More than half of the shoot was dedicated to smiling, happy photos to use in graduation announcements," Kennedy told Mashable. "Something to make my Mamaw happy. Love you, Mamaw."

Below are the images Kennedy posted to Imgur with their original captions.

Hope Mamaw likes them as much as we do.

So I had my graduation shots done yesterday.
