Dell's 13-inch XPS 2-in-1 is all screen and (almost) no chin
LAS VEGAS -- Dell's XPS line of laptops and 2-in-1s has gotten a lot of praise — and rightfully so. These devices are powerful, sleek and solidly built, making them strong competitors to Apple's line of ultra-thin laptops.
The company is adding to its line with the new Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, a 13-inch laptop that can easily turn into a tablet.
The computer boasts Dell's InfinityEdge tech, which basically means "very thin bezels." This makes it, according to Dell, the smallest 13-inch 2-in-1 on the planet. It joins the 13-inch and 15-inch XPS laptops, along with the 12-inch XPS 12 2-in-1.
While the screen's bezels are nearly invisible on the top and on the sides, the device does have a noticeable chin on the bottom, but it's not as bad as some others we've seen. The webcam is at the bottom of the screen, just below the chin, but if you flip the device into tent mode, it's on top, so no big hassle there.
Specs-wise, the XPS 13 2-in-1 has a 7th-gen Intel Core processor (i5 or i7), a quad HD or a full HD display, Intel's 615 graphics chip and a promised 15-hour battery life. Memory options range from 4 to 16GB, while storage starts at 128GB and ends with a 1TB SSD.
There's no USB-A port, but you get an adapter.
As far as ports go, you get a Thunderbolt 3 port (which double's as an AC power port), a USB-C port, a headphone jack and a microSD card reader. Yup -- there's no USB-A port, but Dell ships a USB-A to USB-C adapter with every device.
Other tidbits that say "premium" include an aluminum body, fingerprint reader, backlit keyboard and carbon fiber composite palm rest.
The weight for the XPS 13 2-in-1 starts at 2.7 pounds but can get heavier, depending on the configuration.
