Donald Trump explains why he wouldn't want a 'poor person' in his cabinet

So much for draining the swamp

"Drain the swamp" was one of the most memorable slogans of Donald Trump's presidential campaign. It was used to condemn Hillary Clinton's perceived cosiness with Wall Street types.

So Mr Trump's declaration that he wouldn't appoint a poor person to a cabinet position has raised eyebrows.

During a rally in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Trump doubled down on those who questioned his appointment of super rich banker Wilbur Ross as Secretary of Commerce.

"I said, 'Because that's the kind of thinking we want ... because they're representing the country. They don't want the money."

"And I love all people — rich or poor — but in those particular positions, I just don't want a poor person," Trump said. "Does that make sense? If you insist, I'll do it — but I like it better this way."

That seems to directly contradict the whole anti-Wall Street rhetoric Trump was were elected on.

For example, during the 2016 primary election Trump said: "I know the guys at Goldman Sachs. They have total, total control over [Ted Cruz] ... just like they have total control over Hillary Clinton."

Hmmmm.
