Adrian Carmack and John Romero, id Software co-founders and Doom (the original one) collaborators, are joining forces on a new shooter, called Blackroom.

The game's premise focuses on HOXAR, a fictional technology firm that has perfected holographics. The title is a reference to the featureless chambers that house elaborate holographic experiences.

As you might expect from a game built by two of the guys behind Doom, Blackroom splits itself between a single-player story and online play. The game is also designed with modders in mind, a nod to Doom's enduring community of amateur content creators.

The Carmack/Romero alliance marks a return to gaming for the former. Carmack was fired from id in 2005, and sued his former employer soon after that, claiming he was forced out after refusing to accept a lowball offer to sell back his stake in the company.

If there was ever any lingering bad blood over the lawsuit, the two men seem to have squashed it. They're now partnered up and banking on the name recognition their involvement brings to propel a freshly launched Kickstarter campaign.

Blackroom is looking to generate a minimum of $700,000 in crowdfunding over the next 32 days. It's so early in the process that there's no gameplay to see just yet, only artwork. The projected release window is Dec. 2018.
