Duolingo is a language-learning app that takes a gamification approach to reaching goals in your target language. Their mascot is a cutesy little owl named Duo, who sends you daily reminders to practice.
But what if you happen you miss a day, or forget? Duo is not a very forgiving beast.

The Duolingo Twitter account recently shared a teaser image for an upcoming app update that gave off pretty ominous vibes.

Most users speculated that this probably pointed to a "dark mode" for the app. But when the Twitter account denied that this update was a dark mode, it only made the image seem even more menacing.
The memes rolled in — he sees you when you're sleeping. He knows when you're awake. He knows when you haven't practiced Japanese in three days, and he's out for vengeance.
