Empire State Building lit up rainbow in honor of Australia's same-sex marriage vote
Australia's vote to legalize same-sex marriage is being celebrated around the world, and following the news the Empire State Building showed support by lighting up in the glorious colors of the rainbow.
Though the Australian Parliament still has to officially vote to pass the legislation, Tuesday's postal survey showed an overwhelming 61.6 percent of residents (7,817,247 people) were in favor of same-sex marriage and 38.4 percent (4,873,987 people) were opposed.
It's a history-making step towards achieving marriage equality that certainly deserves some ✨extra lit✨ recognition.
As New Yorkers celebrated the progress thousands of miles away, the colorfully beaming Empire State Building served as another reminder that this is a huge deal.

In the past, the building has lit up different colors to celebrate holidays like the Fourth of July and International Women's Day, among many others, and gone dark to mark tragic events like the Las Vegas shooting.
It's also been rainbow before to show support for the LGBTQ community on Pride Day, but the rare sight is surely a treat.
