The French government has released a mobile app that will alert the public in case of a suspected terrorist attack.

The app, named SAIP, was made available to download for free on Apple Store and Google Play on June 8, two days before the start of Euro 2016 football tournament in France.

The Interior Ministry said the app - which was developed after the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks in Paris that killed 130 people - will alert geolocated users in case of attack.

It also allows users to sign up to receive alerts in up to 8 different "geographical zones" in addition to their present location. These alerts will offer a description of what has happened as well as advice on how to stay safe.

To ensure that potential hostages do not alert the attackers, the app will not send vibrations or sounds, opting for a visual notification instead.

The government has said that users' privacy will be protected. No names, phone numbers or IP address will be stored.

Later versions of the app will alert users to other emergencies such as floods and avalanches.
