'Cosby Show' actor Geoffrey Owens says he's feeling pretty good about his job at Trader Joe's
Yes, former Cosby Show actor Geoffrey Owens is now working at a Trader Joe's and, to hear him tell it, he's feeling pretty good about things these days.
Owens, who played "Elvin" on the NBC sitcom, opened up to Good Morning America on Tuesday about the firestorm that's ensued in the days since he was photographed at his current job at a New York City Trader Joe's.

The photograph set off a huge debate thanks to a particularly bad story about the photo that many, Owens included, viewed as job shaming.

Showing a sense of humor about the whole ordeal ("They photoshopped those pictures... I was actually preparing for my role as Falstaff in a production of Henry IV, Part I set in a grocery store"), Owens admitted he was "devastated" when he first saw the photos, but that it quickly turned around as he saw the outpouring of support.
Owens said, "the period of devastation was so short, because so shortly after that, the responses –my wife and I started to read these responses from literally all over the world of support and so, fortunately, the shame part didn’t last very long."
The actor also explained how he came to decide to work at the grocery store, where's he been working for 15 months, and how he got recognized "every day" by customers who were "very, very cool about it."
"I got to a point where I'd been teaching, acting, directing for 30+ years, but it got to a point where it just didn't add up enough and you gotta do what you got to do," Owens said.
It's a terrific, short interview that closes with Owens saying that the story about him, specifically, will pass but that, "I hope what doesn't pass is this rethinking about what it means to work, the honor of the working person and the dignity of work."
And as if Owens needed anything else to underscore how he's handled this whole situation with grace and aplomb, he did the interview while wearing his Trader Joe's name tag on his blazer.
Right on.
