Hannibal Buress paid a look-alike $500 to hit the 'Spider-Man' red carpet in his place

He claims it was due to "extreme FOMO."

Hollywood is usually the one tricking the rest of the world under the guise of film magic, but it looks like Hollywood got duped on Wednesday night at the premiere of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Hannibal Buress, who plays Coach Wilson in the film, wasn't able to make the red carpet event. Rather than bow out, he did the only logical thing: put out a casting call for a look-alike to attend in his place.

In a now-deleted tweet, Buress turned to his followers to find a doppelgänger for the Los Angeles premiere of the film, asking for someone "with solid comedic timing for an event tonight." Lo and behold, he found a dude who was willing to answer questions and be treated like a star for a $500 paycheck.

"I'm out here at the 'Spider-Man' movie premiere," he wrote on Twitter.

The mysterious Buress (that, in all honestly, looks nothing like Buress) is actually a Nashville native named Joe Carroll.

"When Hannibal Buress hits you up and tells you to crash the red carpet since he couldn't make it...you crash the damn red carpet," Carroll wrote on Instagram. While some reporters barely raised an eyebrow, at least one person observing the live-streaming premiere noticed something was up.

You can watch Carroll hilariously troll a reporter on the red carpet below:

As for Buress, he claims to have just done it because of "extreme FOMO."
