First Zayn, then Brexit, now this?

According to Billboard, boy band crooner Harry Styles has signed a recording contract with Columbia Records, home of One Direction. If confirmed, the move signals that the singer is taking serious steps towards establishing a solo career.

Styles had already been inching toward a life outside of One Direction. Many outlets reported in 2015 that new songs had been registered in The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) list with his name listed in the writing credits.

Additionally, the singer has recently taken on other projects beyond music, including a foray on the big screen in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk alongside Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy.

It's been over a year since former bandmate Zayn Malik called it quits, and since then he has released his own solo album. Despite their insistence that One Direction was not going to break up, remaining members of the boy band have stayed silent on Styles' possible departure.
