LONDON -- Iceland may have been beaten 5-2 by France and knocked out of the Euro 2016 football tournament in the quarter finals, but their legend will live on.

Since they drew against group favourites Portugal in their opening match, Iceland have been the plucky underdogs everyone's been cheering for.

They eventually finished second in their group, before going on to beat England in the tournament's second round (much to the delight of absolutely everyone in the world apart from England) and setting themselves up for a quarter final against host nation France. They have hands down the best commenter, hands down the best football chant, and hands down the world's scariest supporters backing them.

Going in to the quarter finals against France, everyone was rooting for them.

Their new president, Guðni Jóhannesson, apparently even traded in his VIP seat to go and stand with his fellow supporters.

Sadly, the optimism didn't last long. As the first half drew to a close, Iceland were 4-0 down.

(We're pretty sure Clarkson meant to write "bugger" there.)

Some people used it as a chance to mock England again.

Ultimately, though, Iceland managed to pull a couple back. And even though they lost the match 5-2, they still won the Internet.
