As rain continues to fall across India, roads have been closed, houses destroyed and thousands affected by rising floodwaters.

But in the Indian city of Mumbai, many are opening up their homes and extending a helping hand to all those affected by the floods, the worst the city has seen in a decade -- using social media.

The hashtag #RainHosts began trending on Twitter as offers of help poured in:

Someone also created a spreadsheet recording all the different locations where people had opened their doors:

Mumbai has been rocked by the worst storm the city has seen in a decade, with water logging of up to 5ft across several parts of the city.

Videos and images on social media show the impact the flood has had on the city:

More than 1,200 have been killed in floods across India, Nepal and Bangladesh as the region sees its worst monsoon disaster in years.

Monsoon season typically lasts from July to September across South Asia.
