Since the pilot episode, Jaime and Cersei have been Game of Thrones’ ride or die couple (apologies). With rumors swirling that someone may come between them in Season 7, Mashable asked actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau to weigh in.

We began by addressing the first person to come between Cersei and Jaime: Brienne of Tarth.

“It’s an interesting relationship,” Coster-Waldau said of his character’s former captor and now besotted friend. “There’s no question there’s a lot of emotion between them, they have a shared history."

“I think he’s committed to his sister,” Coster-Waldau added. “I don’t think any romantic -- even if there are -- I mean clearly [he and Brienne] have emotional responses when they’re together -- but they would never, I don’t think he allows that to get into his mind or to act on it at all.”

To that end, is Jaime loyal to Cersei simply because he doesn’t know how not to be?

“Yeah, absolutely,” Coster-Waldau says. “This has been going since they were 15/16 and it’s been all about -- his life has been about serving her needs…I think that kind of programming is not -- I mean I think when he spent that year with Brienne on the road...that was the first time ever he had forcefully been away from his sister for that long a stretch of time.”

“But yeah, he is very much -- he clearly doesn’t seem to be able to let go of that,” he added, his voice growing quiet. “I think he loves his sister.”

Coster-Waldau concluded his answer by looking away and sipping on his coffee, which made it all the more tempting to ask what would happen if someone came between the twin lovers.

“Hypothetically,” he acknowledged, “you would think” Jaime would be upset. He chuckles.

“I don’t know, I mean I haven’t seen anyone come between them, so I don’t know,” he says. “It’s difficult to know how people would react -- I mean how would you react?”

That’s a separate question since we don’t all have Valyrian steel swords at our sides and a prophecy foretelling our lover’s murder. But, as he says, we’ll have to watch the show.

Game of Thrones returns July 16.
