Former Marvel company man James Gunn is joining the DC family.

Gunn has been set to write Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros., as reported by THR and others Tuesday, and could also be in the running to direct.

At Disney, Gunn helmed both Guardians of the Galaxy movies. He was on board to make the third when he was fired in July after a bad faith campaign against him resurfaced a series of old tweets in which he had joked about pedophilia, rape, and other ugly topics.

As of yet, no replacement director has been announced for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The first Suicide Squad was directed by David Ayer, and raked in a healthy $746 million worldwide despite poor reviews. The sequel has been slow to get started, however – it's already been through at least one potential director in The Accountant's Gavin O'Connor.

What Gunn might make of the #skwad remains to be seen, of course, but rumor has it that he'll have plenty of room to make that world his own.

Gunn has mostly laid low since his dismissal from Disney, but it seems he's ready to tiptoe back into the public eye.

Sony also announced today that its Gunn-produced project BrightBurn has been moved from Nov. 30, 2018 to May 24, 2019 – a plum Memorial Day spot that seems to indicate the studio is optimistic about the movie.

Suicide Squad 2 does not yet have a release date.
