JetBlue is adding a ton of New York City routes

Great news for anyone flying New York to Boston, and anyone flying out of Newark.

JetBlue, which is fond of constantly referring to itself as "New York's Hometown Airline," announced new routes on Thursday that live up to the trademark.

Beginning in October, the airline will offer service between New York's LaGuardia and Boston's Logan airports: six roundtrips a day during the week, two on Saturday and three on Sunday.

This route puts JetBlue in competition with the Delta and US Airways shuttle services between those airports.

JetBlue also announced new routes from Newark International Airport, in New Jersey, to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), Orlando International Airport (MCO), Tampa International Airport (TPA), Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) and Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW).

The expanded service at LaGuardia and Newark builds on JetBlue's existing footprint at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The announcement follows a decision by the Federal Aviation Administration to ease slot restrictions at Newark, meaning there are now more available times — or slots — for flights to arrive and leave the airport. The FAA had put restrictions in place in 2008 because of congestion.

"The FAA’s decision to ease slot restrictions at Newark allows us to bring more low-fare, award-winning service to Newark," JetBlue president and CEO Robin Hayes said in a statement, "and clears the way for a long overdue alternative between LaGuardia and Boston for those who have been priced out of air travel and onto the roads and rails by high-fare legacy carriers."

Indeed, JetBlue's massive entrance into the New York-Boston route is sure to increase competition and decrease costs.

JetBlue is kicking off the LaGuardia to Logan route, which the airline is operating on Embraer 190 aircraft, with introductory $49 one-way fares.

JetBlue will likely have an impact on more than legacy carriers: Several business travel and private jet startups, like the Jay Z-backed JetSmarter, hope to build clientele that frequent the route.
