John Cho reveals Sulu is gay in 'Star Trek Beyond'
Star Trek Beyond will get a progressive new touch, according to star John Cho.
In the upcoming film, his character, Hikaru Sulu, is gay, according to the Herald Sun, and shown with a partner and daughter.
Director Justin Lin and writer Simon Pegg made the call, Cho says, as a nod to openly gay actor George Takei, who famously played Sulu in the Star Trek franchise.

“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations,” Cho told the Herald Sun.
Representatives for Cho have not yet responded to Mashable's request for comment.
Star Trek Beyond will fly into theaters on July 22.
