Marlins pitcher José Fernández was at the top of his game when he died in a boating accident at 24 on Sunday. His unexpected death had many fans remembering some of his most defining moments on the baseball field.

The young pitcher originally from Cuba -- whose Major League Baseball career began in 2011 as a first-round draft selection for the Marlins -- has been characterized over and over again as a rising star following reports of the Miami crash. Below is a look back at some of the moments that earned him that distinction.

1. Fernández hits his first career home run

Back in 2013, Fernández hit his first career homer as a rookie in a game against the Atlanta Braves, which ended up causing quite the commotion. Players cleared their benches to rush the field. A stunned Fernández admired the hit with a great deal of emotion before he journeyed to home plate.

3. Fernández's return to the Marlins post-Tommy John surgery

Fernández dazzled during his first game after surgery on a ligament in his right elbow. After just over a one-year recovery break from the field, Fernández returned with impressive pitching and even hit a home run.

4. Fernández plays in his first All Star game

In 2013, Fernández participated in his first legendary MLB All Star Game at just 20 years old, starting the first inning with a strikeout and impressive plays throughout the game.

5. His 500th strikeout

In the fourth inning of a 2016 game, Fernández struck out Cody Asche of the Phillies with a 97-mph heater. Fernández's tenth strikeout of the game also marked the 500th strikeout of his career.
