SINGAPORE -- As local appetites for bigger and better burgers grow, McDonald's is heeding the call by bringing its "premium" range of burgers here.

Three new burgers will start becoming available islandwide: classic cheese with Angus beef, spicy tortilla with angus beef, and spicy chicken with apple slaw.

Before this, the burgers were available only at the new flagship location that opened a month ago at East Coast Park. That outlet has a salad bar, a dessert station, and other food items like soups and Belgian waffles that that don't exactly scream McDonald's.

Those burgers must be doing well if McDonald's wants to roll it out more widely. The fast food conglomerate has been running its some 120 restaurants in Singapore directly for 20 years, and not (yet) via the franchise model it uses in the U.S. and Europe.

Naturally, the burgers are priced a little higher since they are made with more expensive ingredients. Both the spicy tortilla and spicy chicken burgers come with semolina buns, and the patties on all three are far thicker than the regular McDonald's varieties.

They all cost about S$8.95 ($6.70) a la carte. For reference, a Big Mac is priced at S$5.95 ($4.40).

This isn't the first time McDonald's has introduced premium burgers in Singapore. Its made-to-order "create your own taste" line was introduced in 2015, and featured options such as different cheese or bun varieties, and a choice of how many patties to stack within.

The new burgers seem to have received mostly favourable reviews online.
