"What do we do if we don't have hope, Oprah?"

First Lady Michelle Obama got real about what it's like to be facing Donald Trump's America during an interview with Oprah Winfrey this week, a clip of which aired on CBS on Friday.

While hope was the message of her husband's presidential campaigns, and entire presidential terms really, it was a bitter topic for FLOTUS in the interview. In the days and weeks since the historic presidential victory, she said, things have just been different.

"We feel the difference now. See, now, we are feeling what not having hope feels like," she told Winfrey. "Hope is necessary. It's a necessary concept and Barack didn't just talk about hope because he thought it was just a nice slogan to get votes."

She went further, explaining why the Obamas have historically advocated a need to look to the future and toward a better day. "He and I and so many believe -- what else do you have if you don't have hope?" she said. "What do you give your kids if you can't give them hope?"

The First Lady broke down that concept through a beautiful metaphor about a child bumping their head on a table, saying how a parent's reaction can help in that difficult moment. Rather than freaking out, he or she can react differently and teach a valuable lesson.

"And you're like, you know what babe? It's okay, it's okay," she said. "And I feel that way about the nation. I feel that Barack has been that for the nation, in ways that people will come to appreciate."

And what exactly will we all soon appreciate? "Having a grown-up in the White House who can say to you in times or crisis and turmoil, 'hey it's going to be okay,'" she said. "'Let's remember the good things that we have, let's look at the future.'"

Her words went down well on Twitter.

Michelle truly is all of us.
