In the ever-evolving, uphill fight against trolls, abuse, and general nastiness on social media, Twitter announced on Monday that it's expanding notification filters.

Previously, users were limited in the ways they could mute other tweeters--not fun when users roll up in your mentions declaring "LOL your a 1DioT dummy LOLOL #MAGA." Now, Twitter has expanded who you can preemptively mute.

According to Twitter, the new "quality filters" include:

  • Accounts that are new (that you don’t follow).

  • Accounts that don’t follow you (that you don’t follow).

  • Accounts you don’t follow.

  • Accounts with a default profile photo (that you don’t follow).

  • Accounts without a confirmed email address (that you don’t follow).

  • Accounts without a confirmed phone number (that you don’t follow).

Several of these filters were rolled out to the Android and web versions of Twitter early in 2017, but now they're available to everyone and with a few more options.

These are in addition to other tools the company has rolled out in recent months as it continues to battle harassment, an issue that's plagued the company and gained renewed attention in 2016 thanks to high-profile victims of harassment like Leslie Jones and the emergence of the "alt-right" on the platform.

Of course, none of these tools actually stop the harassment from happening and some of the filters will cut down on engagement with users you don't follow who aren't bored, hateful trolls, which can actually be fun when everyone's polite.

But that's probably expecting too much out of humanity in 2017, so here we are.
