'Mulan' will stream on Disney+ in December for no additional cost

Disney has now announced Mulan will be available to stream on Disney+ from Dec. 4 at no extra cost. It's a far cry from the theatrical release many fans had been anticipating at the start of the year.

Plans to release Mulan in theatres were thoroughly thwarted by the coronavirus pandemic in March, with the highly anticipated live-action film delayed just weeks before its scheduled release. Disney announced several hopeful changes of date in the following months, but eventually scrapped Mulan's theatrical release in favour of a Sept. 4 premiere on streaming service Disney+.

However, to watch Mulan in September, viewers will have to pay $29.99 for Premier Access — an additional charge on top of their Disney+ subscription. It's arguably a bargain for a family, with adults having the added benefit of not needing to wrangle young children in a public space, but less of a deal for solo viewers.

Fortunately, if you're happy to keep being patient, Mulan will be part of the general Disney+ catalogue in just three more months. So even if $29.99 feels a bit out of your reach right now, you won't have to wait too much longer to see Yifei Liu's Mulan go kick some honey buns.

The question now is how Mulan's unconventional release will impact Disney's revenue, and whether it will affect the company's programming decisions going forward.

Mulan hits Disney+ on Sept. 4 for the price of your subscription plus $29.99, or Dec. 4 without the additional fee.
