Nigel Farage has taken the European Parliament by the storm after the Brexit vote.

The anti-EU Ukip leader, also a prominent campaigner in the Leave movement, had a chance to speak his mind after Britain decided to withdraw from the union.

He showed up at an emergency session of the European Parliament with a Union Jack flag:

As European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker said Europe "must respect British democracy and the way it has expressed its view" in his opening statement, Farage started applauding.

“That’s the last time you are applauding here,” Juncker replied.

“To some extent I am really surprised that you are here,” he told him.

“You were fighting for the exit, the British people voted in favour of the exit. Why are you here?”

Then, it came Farage's turn.

"Isn’t it funny? When I came here 17 years ago and I said that I wanted to lead a campaign go get Britain out of the European Union, you all laughed at me. Well, I have to say, you’re not laughing now, are you?" he started.

After stressing that UK should trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon treaty to begin withdrawal talks quickly, Farage angered MEPs by saying that none of them have ever had a proper job.

"None of you have ever done a proper job in your lives"

"Now, I know that virtually none of you have ever done a proper job in your lives or worked in business or worked in trade or indeed ever created a job," he said.

But Farage's performance was particularly enjoyable because of the faces of the parliamentarians behind the Ukip leader. In particular, a man facepalming - quickly dubbed "facepalm man" - captured Twitter's imagination:

Another day in British politics.
