What if you could play an Uncharted game on your smartphone?

You can bet Sony's newly established ForwardWorks Corporation is exploring that possibility. The company's mission is to bring familiar PlayStation favorites -- not necessarily the games themselves, but the franchises and IP -- to smart devices.

ForwardWorks kicks off operations on Apr. 1, the same day a name change transforms "Sony Computer Entertainment" into "Sony Interactive Entertainment." The team will (initially, at least) focus on bringing mobile games to customers in Japan and throughout Asia.

There are tons of games created specifically for overseas markets that never reach the U.S. or Europe, including big-money franchises like Call of Duty. The ForwardWorks releases could be no different.

That said, Sony has a demonstrated interest in bringing its popular franchises to the mobile market. The now-defunct PlayStation Mobile gave developers the ability to create mobile games inside the PlayStation ecosystem.

The service shut down in Sept. 2015, and ForwardWorks is the first hint we've gotten that Sony still carries a torch for mobile gaming. It's fair to speculate that success in Asia could bring about a broader focus for the new company.

As it stands, the announcement indicates that Sony has a serious interest in spreading the PlayStation brand to a new set of screens. The announcement notes that ForwardWorks hopes to create "full-fledged game titles" for smart device users to enjoy.
