After surviving Puerto Rico's deadly Hurricane Maria, a group of rescued dogs have arrived in U.S. cities, ready for adoption.

In one instance, reported by the New York Post, a total of 53 dogs were scooped up by animal rescue group The Sato Project — and 28 of these are up for adoption in New York City (the rest have been distributed to shelters around the U.S.).

Lower East Side no-kill animal shelter Animal Haven is where you’ll find the NYC-based pooches, flown to the city via charter plane from Puerto Rico, funded by the John and Wendy Neu Foundation.

The adoptees are a mix of dogs who were abandoned during the storm, strays and family dogs given to local shelters after the storm, reports the newspaper.

This rescue follows a group of 60 dogs also rescued by The Sato Project in early October — the group told the Huffington Post they had estimated around 500,000 stray dogs across the island when Hurricane Maria hit.

These guys got lucky:

The Sato Project has done seriously epic work rescuing dogs and cats in Puerto Rico, following Hurricane Maria. And they're not alone, with organisations like PETA committing to the rescue effort too with their own evacuations.
