SINGAPORE -- Wednesday marked the first since one of Singapore's founding fathers and first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, passed away.

During Lee's state funeral procession last year, tens of thousands of people queued for hours to pay their last respects to the revered politician.

Here are some of the other tributes Singaporeans posted online to remember him and his contributions to the country during his 56 years in office.

And while it's a solemn day for the nation, today is a bittersweet occasion for one family in Mannargudi, a town in Tamil Nadu. Their son, named Lee Kuan Yew Jayaprakash, will celebrate his first birthday on the same day that the political leader departed.

The boy was given the name by his father B. Jayaprakash, who was moved by the outpouring of grief in Singapore and its neighbours on this day last year.

According to The Star, it is not uncommon for parents in Tamil Nadu to give their offsprings names of prominent Indian or foreign personalities. Many families in the area have had breadwinners who credit their earnings in Singapore with making their lives better back home, and many put up shrines dedicated to Lee last year when he passed.
