MashReads Podcast: Roald Dahl's 'BFG' is a gloriumptious children's book adults should reread

This week on the MashReads Podcast, we explore the buckswashling, hopscotchy, propsposterous mind of Roald Dahl by reading The BFG, a tale of one girl's encounter with a dream-catching Big Friendly Giant. 

Then, because the The BFG is being made into an upcoming Steven Spielberg movie, we talk about the best movie adaptations of children's books.

• Aliza gives two shoutouts: one for the new trailer for Pete's Dragon, a reboot of the 1977 Disney film, and one for Ron Chernow's Alexander Hamilton, the biography that inspired the Tony Award-winning musical Hamilton. She also recommends 'What It's Like To Write About Your Best Friend's Death,' a heartbreaking essay about loss and friendship.

• Peter has been reading the MashReads book club selection Modern Lovers, by Emma Straub (which will be featured on the podcast next week) and The Familiar by Mark Z. Danielewski.

• MJ recommends 'Choosing a School for My Daughter in a Segregated City,' a New York Times article about the various ways in which New York City's public schools are still segregated, the benefits of desegregation and one woman's journey to navigate that system while choosing a school for her daughter. He also recommends 'On the Inside,' a four-part true crime miniseries from Reply All.
