One horrifying 'Sex and the City' scene was too much, even for HBO
You wouldn't expect HBO to be nonplussed by a sex scene, but apparently the network put its foot down during Season 1 of Sex and the City.
According to a Vanity Fair deep dive, the scene between Charlotte and her blow job-loving paramour started with a fight and ended with a dash of bestiality.
In Season 1, Charlotte was dating a man who was always trying to get her to perform oral sex, but in the scene in question, she was done with it.
"In the final scene, she basically let him have it about being offended by his insistence on just wanting a blow job," series creator Darren Starr recalled. "She accused him of only liking her for that and kind of stormed out. And then she walked back in and saw that his golden retriever was going down on him.”
Um...what???
“It’s sort of horrifying that we shot that," added writer Amy B. Harris. "We shot him putting peanut butter on his penis, and Charlotte walks back in like, ‘Oh, I’m being unreasonable,’ and then she sees that...I can’t believe we even thought about doing it.”
We can't either, though we can imagine the Game of Thrones writers taking a moment to consider this during production on Season 8 (we're only half-kidding. Guys, don't do this).
Show runner Michael Patrick King also said the network asked for an edit on a Season 3 episode where a statue of the Virgin Mary appeared to be looking at a box of condoms.
“People were like, ‘That’s too far!’ So we took Mary out,” he said.
Sex and the City celebrated its 20th anniversary on Wednesday, prompting fans and the cast and crew of the show to indulge in some hardcore reminiscing. The entire series is streaming on HBO and Amazon.
