Did you catch the Miles Morales Easter egg in 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'?

Spoiler alert: This post contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Homecoming. 

Miles Morales isn't in Spider-Man: Homecoming – though many fans had hoped otherwise, this new Spidey is, yet again, Peter Parker.

But the film does include a little wink at that other webslinger, for comic book fans paying close attention.

Spider-Man: Homecoming features Donald Glover as Aaron Davis, a small-time criminal looking to buy some illegal weaponry from the Vulture's minions. Spidey interrupts the deal, and then later confronts Aaron to get information on the whereabouts of the baddies.

During that second encounter, Aaron tells Spidey that he doesn't really like black-market alien tech floating around the neighborhood, either – he doesn't want that kind of stuff around his nephew.

It's a brief conversation, and if you know nothing about the comics, Glover's role probably won't stand out as anything special.

But if you are a comics reader, well, you've probably already figured out where this is going. Aaron Davis is Miles Morales' uncle in the books, which presumably means Miles is the "nephew" that Aaron was referring to.

Miles, for those who need a refresher, was introduced in 2011 in Marvel's "Ultimate" comic book universe. In that alternate timeline, Peter Parker has died, and Miles – a black Latino teenager from Brooklyn – has taken over the Spider-Man identity.

His comic book debut came about a year after Donald Glover's half-joking social media campaign to play Peter Parker in what would become The Amazing Spider-Man. In fact, Miles' creator Brian Michael Bendis has cited Glover as a partial inspiration for the design of the character.

Glover lost out on the Amazing Spider-Man role to Andrew Garfield – but he did get his chance to play Spidey a few years later. He voiced Miles in a couple episodes of the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series on Disney XD.

His Spider-Man: Homecoming role, then, kinda brings things full circle.

Of course, the question now is what this means for Miles Morales in the MCU. Miles is never seen or even mentioned by name in Spider-Man: Homecoming, so this entire thing could turn out to be nothing more than a fun little Easter egg.

For what it's worth, Homecoming director Jon Watts has confirmed that he purposely cast Glover in his movie because of the #Donald4SpiderMan campaign, and said that his playing Aaron Davis "opens the door" to the possibility of Miles Morales.

As of now, though, no one official has actually gone on the record and announced that Miles Morales will appear in a future MCU project. And with Tom Holland just settling in as Peter Parker, Marvel and Sony probably aren't in any rush to introduce another Spider-Man into the MCU.

But chin up, Miles fans – you will see him onscreen soon, just not in live-action and not in the MCU. Miles is confirmed to be the lead character in Sony's animated Spider-Man movie, due out in 2018. He'll be voiced by Dope's Shameik Moore, and Moonlight's Mahershala Ali will voice Aaron Davis.

And, in another amusing coincidence, Jefferson Davis – Miles' dad and Aaron's brother – will be voiced by Glover's Atlanta co-star Brian Tyree Henry. Small world, huh?
