John Boyega says 'The Last Jedi' will tell us 'exactly which way' the Finn/Poe relationship is going

There has been an awakening -- have you felt it?

No, we're not talking about Rey's burgeoning Force powers; we mean the chemistry between Resistance fighter Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and rebel Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) -- aka the pairing that the internet has affectionately dubbed "StormPilot."

The ship that launched a thousand memes has been the talk of the interwebs since The Force Awakens, and Oscar Isaac recently stoked the fires by admitting that he's "very open to those possible storylines" that might see Poe in a same-sex relationship. But will we actually see any evidence of attraction on screen?

When asked where he stands on a potential Finn/Poe relationship, John Boyega gave Mashable a suitably cryptic answer that nevertheless gives something away.

"I’ve watched the film and I will confirm, that will be confirmed in The Last Jedi -- you will know exactly which way it’s going," Boyega insisted. "Seriously, you’ll know, by the time you watch it, you’ll know."

The suggestion that we'll "know which way it's going" could reveal something about either Finn or Poe in terms of a relationship, but we're taking Boyega's tease with a grain of salt -- especially since we also asked director Rian Johnson whether there would be any LGBTQ representation in The Last Jedi or his upcoming standalone Star Wars trilogy, and his answer was far less open to interpretation.

"In The Last Jedi, no, there wasn't an opportunity for it, but I think it's something that would absolutely... There's so many other elements of society today that are being reflected in these movies increasingly more and more, and I think that's important," Johnson said. "I think that really means a lot to people. I think that's important to keep doing it and to keep going further with."

(It's worth noting that, even if it's not addressed in The Last Jedi, Laura Dern's Vice Admiral Holdo has been established as queer in the tie-in novel Leia: Princess of Alderaan. After Leia expresses her preference for "humanoid males," Holdo remarks that such a choice seems "limiting.")

While Johnson has actually retweeted some StormPilot fan art in the past, the helmer insists there was no ulterior motive behind it: "I thought that was an adorable picture. I thought that was really sweet and lovely, but it wasn't meant as a predictor of where it’s going -- I'm sorry if it got anyone's hopes up."

It sounds like Finn might be too hung up on Rey to see the dashing pilot who's been in front of him all along (Boyega also told us that while Finn is struggling to decide whether he believes in the Resistance in The Last Jedi, "The one thing that hasn’t changed about him is his love for Rey – that’s all that drives him"), but maybe J.J. Abrams' Episode IX can make good on the director's apparent desire to add to the inclusivity of the franchise.

"To me the fun of Star Wars is exploring the possibilities, so it seems insanely narrow-minded to say that there wouldn't be a homosexual character in that world," he said back in 2016.

Help us give this ship new wings, Obi-Wan Abrams, you're our only hope.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi debuts in theaters on Dec. 15.
