Universal greenlights 'Cats' movie musical with director Tom Hooper
It was only a matter of time before we got a big screen adaptation of Cats, Andrew Lloyd Weber's blockbuster musical. (Make that a matter of a lot of time: The show premiered in London in 1981.)
According to Variety, a Cats film is indeed in the early stages of production, with The King's Speech and The Danish Girl director Tom Hooper at the helm.

Hooper directed the 2012 film version of Les Misérables, which won three Academy Awards and gained much attention for recording its songs live. Hooper will reunite with Universal and Working Title for Cats, with Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner joining Hooper and Debra Hayward as producers.
Cats, based on T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats," is the fourth-longest running show in the history of Broadway, where it ran continuously from 1987 to 2006. In 1998, a West End production was filmed for a direct-to-video and TV movie. Hooper's film will be the first feature-length theatrical version.
