'True Detective' Season 3 could star Mahershala Ali and suddenly we're interested again
Oscar winner and professional scene-stealer Mahershala Ali has single-handedly renewed our interest in True Detective Season 3.
The Moonlight star is currently in early talks to star in the third season of HBO's anthology crime drama, Mashable has confirmed, although a deal is not yet in place. HBO declined to comment on Ali's potential involvement, which was first reported by the Tracking Board.
If everything works out, Ali would follow in the footsteps of Season 1 stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and Season 2 leads Rachel McAdams, Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch and Vince Vaughn.
While Season 1 earned critical acclaim and awards glory, Season 2 was... not good, with former HBO boss Michael Lombardo taking responsibility for the lackluster sophomore installment by admitting that he rushed creator Nic Pizzolatto to get it on air before the story was ready. "I’m not going to start betting on them until the scripts are done," he said back in January 2016.
Season 2 of True Detective wrapped in August 2015, so Pizzolatto has now had two years to "gestate" on a new story -- and back in March, reports surfaced that David Milch (creator of Deadwood and NYPD Blue) had come on board to work with Pizzolatto on crafting a third season.
The show still hasn't been officially greenlit for Season 3, but if negotiations with Ali are underway, we're closer than ever, and casting the Luke Cage favorite would be a big step in the right direction.
