Travel to and from Belgium remained severely disrupted on Wednesday, a day after two deadly attacks on the Brussels Airport and a metro station killed at least 34 people and injured many others.

The Brussels Airport tweeted that all passenger flights would remain suspended through at least Thursday.

More than 500 passenger flights arrive or depart from the Brussels Airport each day, according to monthly statistics published on the airport's website, carrying on average more than 50,000 passengers daily.

Within Europe, rail operator Eurostar said its trains were running normally and was resuming regular service through Brussels, but encouraged passengers to check in early because of enhanced security.

On Tuesday, the State Department issued a travel alert, warning U.S. citizens of "potential risks of travel to and throughout Europe."

Officials from the U.S. Embassy in Brussels also urged U.S. citizens in the area to avoid "anti-terrorism police activity," such as raids, "and any other police action that may occur" as authorities investigate Tuesday's attacks.

In Washington, D.C., Senate Democrats, led by New York Democrat Chuck Schumer, have seized on the attack to push for three measures to tighten aviation security. The proposals are part of the must-pass reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration.

The measures include better screening of aviation workers and Transportation Security Administration officers; more emphasis on counterterrorism training for TSA agents; and tightening security at airport perimeters.
