London's iconic Battersea Power Station has opened its doors to the public for the first time in its history. The colossal building is now the heart of a new development which has turned the 42-acre former industrial site into a community of homes, shops, cafes, and cultural venues. The renovation of the development area cost a total of £9bn, including £300m put towards the new Northern Line Underground extension which opened in September 2021.
The original building, which at its peak supplied coal-powered energy to a fifth of London's population, including to Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament, was immortalised on the cover of Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals. The site ceased operation in 1983.
