Unfortunately, action film The Beekeeper isn't about an environmental activist taking on threats to our vital pollinating insects. However, it is about an actual beekeeper taking revenge on phishing scammers, which might be the next best thing.

The Beekeeper follows beekeeper/former secret agent Mr. Clay (Jason Statham), who goes on a bloody revenge mission after his neighbour (Phylicia Rashad) loses her savings in a phishing scam and subsequently kills herself. Of course, it turns out the matter is much bigger than one phishing scam.

The titular apiarist thus hurtles through a gauntlet of fights, amputated fingers, and secret organisations that looks like it could rival the Fast and the Furious franchise for over over-the-top action and improbable plot. Remember to check your disbelief at the door.

The film also features Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, and Jeremy Irons.

The Beekeeper arrives in theatres Jan. 12.
