Remember when you were a kid and you'd check the closet and under your bed for the bogeyman?

These days, kids check for the Slenderman, a creepy internet meme whom two young girls thought was real enough to justify stabbing a classmate nearly to death.

The bizarre 2014 case made headlines around the world, and now HBO has released the first trailer for its upcoming documentary Beware the Slenderman, which will air Jan. 23, 2017.

Irene Taylor Brodsky directed the documentary, which follows Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, 12-year-old girls who lured their best friend into the Wisconsin woods and nearly killed her to appease Slenderman.

Brodsky was given heartbreaking access to their families, so regardless of whether you hold the girls responsible for what they read on the internet, this is one story you won't want to miss.
