Billy Porter reveals how his iconic mechanical Grammys hat actually worked

Like many of us, Billy Porter has been "taking a break" while stuck at home during the coronavirus pandemic. But the actor seems to have a unique understanding of what the term means. Speaking to Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, Porter stated that he's been working on his memoir, a children's picture book, a TV pilot, and new music, completely eclipsing everyone else's half-baked pandemic productivity goals.

"I'm just trying to stay creative," said Porter, stubbornly refusing to leave any creativity for the rest of us.

The fashion icon also told Fallon how Billie Eilish's veil at the American Music Awards inspired his famous mechanical fringed Grammys hat.

"I said, 'Oh, [Eilish's veil is] really cute, but I'm never wearing something that covers up my face. I've waited too long for this moment,'" said Porter.

"My stylist had the remote steps from me. So we had a sign. So when I stood in second position and clasped my purse in between my legs he was to press the button."

Porter encouraged people to donate to the charity Actors Fund, which supports actors in need. The entertainment industry has been hit particularly hard by the coronavirus pandemic, so many performing arts professionals are struggling right now.

"I went through a really dry period in the arts, and they were there for me," said Porter. "So the Actors Fund has really been a huge, huge part of my life."
