An official new trailer has dropped for the Sundance sensation The Birth of a Nation.

Written, directed by and starring Nate Parker, the film tells the story of Nat Turner's slave rebellion in 1831.

The emotional trailer is a chronological look at Turner's life, from a young boy to a religious man determined to find his freedom and lead others in revolt. The film also stars Aja Naomi King as romantic lead Cherry, and Armie Hammer as slave master Samuel Turner.

The film caused a ruckus at this year's Sundance film festival, setting a new record when Fox Searchlight bought it for $17.5 million -- the highest in the festival's history.

The Birth of a Nation hits theaters on Oct. 7.
